Autumn (September to October): The Golden Season

Why it’s the best: Autumn is widely considered the absolute peak time to visit Beijing. The summer heat and humidity vanish, replaced by "clear skies and mild temperatures". This is also the most photogenic time of year.

The Scenery: The hutongs look spectacular as the city’s famous ginkgo trees turn brilliant shades of gold and red. You will see pomegranates ripening on trees in courtyard gardens.

The Experience: A rickshaw ride through the hútòng (alleyways) during a crisp, sunny autumn afternoon is simply perfect. Pair the ride with a stop at Beihai Park for their Chrysanthemum Show in mid-October.

What to Wear:

September: Warm days, cool nights. Short sleeves during the day, but bring a light jacket or cardigan for the evening.

October: Cooler, with daytime highs dropping to 12-18°C (54-64°F). Pack long-sleeved shirts, a fleece, or a light jacket and a scarf.

Spring (April to May): Blossoms & Breezes

Why it’s great: Spring brings a sense of renewal. The weather warms up nicely, and the city bursts into color with fresh blossoms.

The Scenery: Ancient locust trees along the siheyuan (courtyard homes) bloom with pale yellow and white flowers. You will find a soft breeze carrying petals through the lanes.

The Experience: The temperature is perfect for long walks. After your rickshaw ride, you can comfortably wander the "quiet side lanes" like Mao'er Hutong without overheating.

A Note on Allergies: Be aware that spring in Beijing also brings wind, sandstorms, and poplar catkins (fluffy white seeds that fly through the air like snow). If you have allergies, bring a mask.

What to Wear: Light layers. A long-sleeved shirt or thin jacket is usually sufficient.

Summer (June to August): Possible but Hot

Can you go in summer? Yes, tours operate, but be prepared for heat and humidity. However, the rickshaws usually have sunshades to help reduce the heat.

Pros: The hutongs are lush and green, and the long days offer more daylight for sightseeing.

Cons: High heat (often above 30°C/86°F) and sudden rain showers.

Survival Tip: If you go in June, book a morning or late afternoon tour to avoid the midday sun.

Winter (November to March): Dress Warmly

Is it worth it? It is the low season, meaning fewer crowds, but it is cold. Some tours run, but they require serious preparation.

Pros: The hutongs look stunning with a dusting of snow (check out photos of red lanterns against grey bricks and white snow).

Cons: Very dry and windy, especially in November.

Survival Tip: If you book a tour between November and March, wear thermal underwear, gloves, a scarf, and a heavy down jacket. It is not recommended for those who dislike cold weather.

Practical Tips for Your Rickshaw Tour

Location Focus: Most tours center around the Shichahai area (including Qianhai and Houhai lakes), Nanluoguxiang, and Yandaixie Street.

Negotiate First: Drivers are often walking encyclopedias of local history. However, always agree on the route and price (typically ¥50–150 per rickshaw) before you get in.

Combine with a Guide: For the best experience, hire a guide. They can explain the significance of the door posts (which once indicated the owner's rank in the Qing Dynasty) and take you into hidden courtyard homes.

Etiquette: The hutongs are still residential neighborhoods. Do not enter private courtyards (siheyuan) without permission, and always ask before taking photos of residents.

Verdict: Plan your trip for mid-September to mid-October for the absolute best weather and golden light, or April to May for the beautiful spring blossoms
